“The Germans have encircled 60 British and French divisions. We are looking at the collapse of Western Europe with the next few days. “
In the spring of 1940 the West was losing the war against Germany. The Nazis had invaded Belgium and France, and Britain was on the verge of capitulating. As the British forces were cornered in the French coastal town of Dunkirk, in a last-minute desperate act,the British Parliament replaced Conservative Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, known for his appeasement policy towards Hitler, with Winston Churchill who advocated war against the Nazis.
“Why have I been forced to send for Churchill, his record is a catastrophe.”
Churchill’s impulsive, forceful and explosive personality did not win him many friends, even King George the sixth was originally not a fan of the mercurial Churchill. But the film Darkest Hour reveals his qualities as a ferocious leader, who battled his fears and uncertainties and rallied Britain to victory against the Nazis.
“You have the full weight of the world on your shoulders.”
The filmmaker Joe Wright says what attracted him to the character was his humanity.
“It was the element of doubt, you know. The idea that his doubt was a key element to the attainment of wisdom. “
Gary Oldman delivers a tour de force performances as Churchill. He says in the beginning, he had misgivings about accepting the role of a much physically larger character, but he finally took on the challenge.
“But ultimately did I want to stand in a room and say you know we shall fight them on the beaches.I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat.
“We shall fights on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds,we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender!”
“I studied the footage, and what started to emerge was this rather vital, cherubic, cheeky man who was just a dynamic and full of life, charismatic and funny.”
“And before our forces are wiped out completely, now is the time to negotiate.”
“When will the lesson be learned! When, when will the lesson be learned! You cannot reason with a tiger when your head is in its mouth!”
While watching Darkest Hour on experiences the risks, Churchill and, by extension,Britain took fighting in what it seems at the time and almost futile war against tyranny. This is an important film for its historic value and cinematic depth, as well as its message that a democracy should be defended at any cost.
