Experts analyzing disaster data say it may be weeks before floods and other obstacles are cleared away enough. So home owners, builders and insurers can fully assess rebuilding costs, but it is already clear those costs will be high, says Tom Sabbatelli of disaster-modeling firm Risk Management Solutions via Skype.
“The economic losses from windstorm search and intense flooding will total somewhere between some 70 and 90 billion dollars.Obviously there is uncertainties around. That is rain still falling especially cross Louisiana.”
As Harvey pounded Texas, new data showed U.S. economic growth rose to a 3 percent annual rate in April, May and June.Harvey may temporarily hurt U.S. growth though it is far too early to fully assess the damage according to IHS Market economist Patrick Newport on Skype.
“Our best cast (forecast) right now is that it’ll cut growth by about a half of a percent in the third quarter and that may be possibly added growth in the fourth.”
That rebound in growth will come from a massive rebuilding effort needed in Houston and other areas.August U.S. unemployment rate reported Friday was 4.4 percent which did not reflect Harvey’s impact, though storm-related job losses will show up in weekly unemployment claims and next month’s jobless report, according to Bankrate.com’s Mark Hamrick via Skype.
“Obviously that impact will be significant given that so many homes, so many people were affected in Texas and Louisiana.”
While Harvey is one of the worst storms to ever hit the United States, one expert predicts Houston’s reconstruction will be faster and employment will rebound more quickly there than in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.
And before the storm attacks, the city had a healthier, wealthier and more diverse economy and better governance than New Orleans, according to Southern Methodist University economist Cullum Clark via Skype.
“The Houston area economy is at least 6 times bigger than the New Orleans area economy was before Katrina. The estimated economic damage in the area, it is maybe between a third and half as much as Katrina.”
Clark also says the oil industry, a key part of Houston’s economy, will be rebuilt quickly. But IHS Market economist and New Orleans native Patrick Newport says, “Recovery is going to take a long, long time.”
