Standing on earth inside a virtual reality model of the Milky Way galaxy, technology and medicine meet. 3-Dimentional virtual reality is a modern way in which researchers like Oscar Agertz can explore the cosmos.

By immersing himself in the virtual galaxy, at a research lab in Sweden’s Lund University, Agertz can interact with data.

While the 3-Dimentional model helps researchers better understand images, in a way not long ago impossible. A separate team of researchers developed a virtual reality based program to help better understand stem cells. Researcher Shamit Soneji.

So we find that in about 30 minutes, they’re quite proficient in how to use this system, which is a great bonus for us.”

Soneji says he wants to create a bridge between virtual reality and medicine to accelerate data analysis. The research project seeks to merge astronomy and interactive design. The astrophysics team hopes to make its Milky Way model available later this year.
