With clicks and whistles, these three dolphins are obviously communicating something,as they wait for the fish thrown by their trainers in Sweden’s Kolmarden Wildlife Park.Dolphins do not have vocal cords, so the sounds are coming from their blowholes.And we can hear only a part of their tonal range, says senior zoological adviser Mats Almundin.

In order to learn more, scientists from Sweden’s Royal Institute of Technology teamed up with language analysis company, Gavagai AB.Digitized dolphin sounds are feed into a powerful software analyzing how often a certain sound occurs in which situation trying to find more patterns and meaning. But understanding dolphins may require developing a whole different concept of language,says associate professor of phonetics at Linkoping university, Robert Eklund.“Who is a smart animal here? We have a pretty smart animal here and we have our communicative systems. They have theirs, we have ours and can we actually cross the divide here and talk to each other?To some extent yes, we can. We went to know that but to what extent can we expand on that?”

Gavagai AB CEO Lars Hamberg says breaking the language barrier between humans and animals may have important outcomes.“Just being able to communicate at some level with the animals, may give us a different perspective, not only on the animals but also on ourselves.”
